"I have always thought that photography was painting by other means." -Brandon Chan
I am an enthusiastic creator who loves exploring the world through a lens and a paintbrush. As a non-professional photographer and visual artist, art is my ultimate outlet for creative expression, mindfulness, and pure joy. I engage in these pursuits purely out of passion and leisure, using them as a playful way to capture moments and bring my imagination to life without the constraints of formal rules.
Colour is the heart of my artistic journey. I am naturally drawn to bold, vibrant hues, and my paintings reflect a cheerful spectrum of energy and light. Whether I am mixing pigments on a canvas or framing a scene through my camera, I aim to highlight the rich, expressive tones around us. In my photography, while vivid colours often take centre stage, I also like to experiment with dimmer, more muted color palettes. These softer tones allow me to tell different visual stories, exploring mood, shadow, and quiet depth alongside my signature colourful pieces. Art is my way of sharing happiness, creativity, and perspective with the world.
My artistic journey began in a childhood untouched by electronic devices, where creativity thrived on raw imagination and physical materials. Without screens or digital shortcuts, my earliest window into self-expression was built entirely by hand. I spent hours sitting with blank pages, learning to see the world through the point of a pencil and the bristles of a paintbrush. Every piece was a patient, deliberate process—sketching fine guidelines, mixing pigments, and building layers step by step using traditional tools.
That screen-free upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for the tactile experience of art. I learned to love the texture of paper under graphite, the smell of fresh paint, and the unpredictable nature of watercolour washes. There was a unique joy in building an entire visual world from scratch, guided only by practice, observation, and curiosity.
Though my creative toolkit has expanded over time to include photography, those early foundation years defined my connection to art. Starting from humble pencil sketches taught me patience, intentionality, and a lifelong devotion to vibrant expression. Today, that same childhood wonder still drives every colourful stroke and captured image I create.
My photography journey took off at ten years old when I joined my primary school’s photography team, the Cyber Rangers. That pivotal moment marked my introduction to digital technology, as I received my very first electronic device: a digital mirrorless camera. That same reliable camera remains my faithful companion today, continuing to capture the world through my eyes.
Joining the Cyber Rangers opened up a vibrant new universe of visual storytelling and creative growth. Beyond mastering light and angles, the team provided a welcoming community where I met countless like-minded peers and seniors. Together, we shared our passion for capturing moments, exchanging fresh ideas, and pushing each other to see everyday scenes from original perspectives.
Central to this transformative experience was my teacher, Mr Timothy Cheng. His inspiring leadership, dedicated teaching, and genuine care left a lasting impact on my artistic vision. He encouraged us to explore freely while instilling confidence in our creative abilities. Looking back, the Cyber Rangers was more than just an extracurricular activity; it was the foundation of my artistic identity, sparking a lifelong passion for photography that continues to evolve with every frame I capture.
A new chapter in my visual journey unfolded when I acquired the second smartphone of my life—a flagship device featuring exceptional camera technology. Discovering its remarkable image quality changed the way I documented the world around me. Smartphone photography quickly became my primary artistic outlet, seamlessly adapting to the demands of a busy lifestyle.
As daily schedules grew more demanding, dedicated photo-taking trips with heavy camera gear became rare luxuries. Carrying a traditional camera everywhere was no longer practical, but my smartphone offered the ultimate convenience: a powerful lens always tucked inside my pocket. This instant accessibility allowed me to capture spontaneous beauty whenever an opportunity arose, turning everyday routines into creative explorations.
Whether snapping vivid cityscapes on my daily commute or framing quiet moments during short breaks, smartphone photography taught me to stay present and observant. It proved that compelling art does not require elaborate equipment or planned expeditions. Instead, it relies on an eye for detail, light, and perspective. Today, my smartphone serves as a flexible, ever-present canvas, enabling me to keep expressing my passion for vibrant storytelling no matter how fast-paced life becomes.
As time constraints tightened, finding the dedicated hours needed to set up brushes, mix paints, and wait for physical artwork to dry became increasingly difficult. This practical reality forced a significant shift in my visual art journey. The introduction of a tablet into my life marked the beginning of a new era, offering a portable and instant way to continue creating simple digital artwork without the mess or prep work.
While digital platforms provided a convenient bridge to keep my creative spark alive, the transition came with its own set of challenges. Transitioning from physical tools to software proved to be a steep learning curve. Digital art apps offer an overwhelming array of brushes, layers, textures, and features. Although these tools are designed to make creation easier once understood, mastering them requires time and deliberate practice.
I am still in the process of exploring and gaining confidence in this medium. Navigating through endless menus can feel far less intuitive than holding a real brush, but the journey of learning is rewarding in itself. Digital art remains an evolving, flexible space where I can experiment with vibrant ideas whenever a spare moment allows.
A few years ago, my perspective on photography enhanced deeply when I began to realize the true significance of post-processing. I discovered that taking a photo is only the first step of the creative process, while editing is where a image finds its mood, narrative, and soul. It became a powerful tool to enhance the vibrant tones I love, adjust lighting, showcase creativity and bring my original vision fully to life.
Instead of relying on complex, professional computer software, I chose to work entirely with simple mobile editing apps. These intuitive tools fit seamlessly into my everyday routine, allowing me to refine images directly on my smartphone whenever inspiration struck. Learning to manipulate brightness, contrast, and color balance on a smaller screen taught me that impactful editing relies on artistic intent rather than expensive programs.
Through light adjustments and subtle tweaks, mobile apps allowed me to transform ordinary captures into polished, expressive pieces of art. This realization transformed how I view every shot. Editing is no longer just a technical step, but a meaningful, personal extension of my creative voice that allows me to share the world exactly as I experience it.
For me, art has never been a static destination; it is a lifelong exploration driven by curiosity and an eagerness to learn. Visual expression is an evolving journey where every new tool opens fresh pathways to capture the world’s vibrant energy.
Recently, I have expanded my creative horizons by experimenting with new channels of digital creation. Stepping beyond traditional photography and tablet drawing, I have begun exploring action cameras, drones, and mobile gimbals. Soaring overhead with a drone offers a breathtaking aerial perspective on everyday landscapes, while action cameras and gimbals allow me to capture smooth, dynamic motion on the go. To bring these moving visuals together, I have also ventured into light video editing, learning to weave movement, color, and rhythm into cohesive stories.
Embracing these modern mediums has reignited my passion for discovery. Each tool comes with its own unique possibilities, pushing me to experiment with angles and sequences I had never considered before. Whether sketching with a pencil, framing a shot on my smartphone, or editing drone footage, my artistic journey remains a continuous, joyful adventure in learning and self-expression.
